About Gouda
Gouda grew up where the small river Gouwe meets the Hollandse IJssel, and received its city rights in 1272. Its location on the inland waterways between the big cities of Holland made it an important trading town in the Middle Ages: barges passed through its locks, and beer, rope, clay pipes, and candles were made here. The Gothic city hall in the middle of the Markt dates from the fifteenth century and is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. A short walk away stands the Sint-Janskerk, the longest church in the country, famous for its sixteenth-century stained-glass windows. The Waag, built in 1668, is where the cheese that made the town world-famous was weighed, and the cheese market still takes place on the Markt in summer. Today the compact old centre, with its canals, alleys, and almshouses, is perfect for exploring on foot.
